I've led a fairly sheltered life up until now. Letters were mainly reserved for thank you notes and the odd ramble to my Gran. I'd buy a stamp, stick the letter in the postbox and wonder if I'd get a reply back! These days much of my communication is done via email, or text, or Facebook. The humble letter has taken a back seat and differences over weight, size, bulk confuse me into a state of panic every time I enter the post office! I'll admit, this isn't a great position to be in when you've decided to start selling online! It may well be the biggest hurdle I've had to overcome in order to get everything up and running, well that and taxes but that's a whole other story!

So, this week I was looking at my Etsy shop and, to be frank, it's really not doing so great. I now have a healthy number of items stocked and I'm getting a steady stream of traffic and good comments from people I've come into contact with regarding the products but very few bites which, in turn, means little sales. Not good, if anything it's been a huge dent to my confidence. I've begun to wonder if perhaps my work is, well, just pants!

And then I got to thinking. Etsy is primarily an American site and although it seems to have spread well into Europe it's not really that well known over here in the UK. Yes crafty people know about it, but lets be frank, they want to, need to, sell things, they're not really my primary market. I've rather limited my customer base by only making my items available with UK shipping. A quick post on one of the UK teams I follow confirmed that if I want to do well I really need to open myself up to international shipping.

This morning, I took the plunge! I've had a look around the Royal Mail site, found out some prices and altered my listings to accept shipping to other countries. It's quite scary, the big unknown, but hopefully with a bit of trial and error (and some sales!) I'll get it figured out and people will start to love my items as much as I do. Hopefully!
